Gameweek 1

Without further ado, here are my picks for Gameweek 1:

Brentford vs Arsenal – Chambers. He’s well liked by Arteta and is a lot better at crossing than any of us assumed. Has the potential to grab an assist and even a clean sheet, although that’s highly unlikely given how defensively poor Arsenal have been in pre-season. It’s a risk but one that might pay off. (FAIL)

Man Utd vs Leeds – Sancho. There are increasing numbers of reports that he’s set to be given a start by Solskjaer. Will be determined to put in a good performance in his first appearance at Old Trafford. One to watch. (FAIL)

Burnley vs Brighton – Gross has got what it takes to perform well in FPL this season and there’s a good chance he shows that against Burnley in gameweek 1. Will be on some set pieces and likes a shot. Worth a punt. (SUCCESS)

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace – Havertz. Was tempted to pick Alonso as it’s unlikely that Chilwell will start but I’ve plumped for the German. Will likely either start as a false nine or in one of the other attacking positions against a team that isn’t likely to keep many clean sheets! (FAIL)

Everton vs Southampton – Gray. Has shown signs of promise in pre-season. Won’t be likely to be going anywhere near my FPL team for a while perhaps but worth a wait and see. (FAIL)

Leicester vs Wolves – Vardy. Overlooked by many in FPL, probably due to his price, but he looked sharp against Man City in the Community Shield. Might even get the chance to score from the penalty spot. (SUCCESS)

Watford vs Aston Villa – Watkins. Given how many FPL managers have taken him out for Ings, it wouldn’t surprise me if he banged this weekend. From a personal level, he’ll be keen to show Dean Smith that he’s just as capable as Ings. (FAIL)

Norwich vs Liverpool – Mane. A great pick and on good form in pre-season too. Not so much a bad pick compared to Salah now either, especially as there are set to be less penalties given this season with the refereeing and VAR changes. (FAIL)

Newcastle vs West Ham – Saint-Maximin. Such a talented player. Will be looking to kick on from his form at the end of last season. Just a shame he’s listed as a striker now in FPL, he’d be in more teams if still classed as a midfielder I reckon. (SUCCESS)

Tottenham vs Man City – Alli. Has looked decent in pre-season and likes big games. If he plays, he’s perfectly capable of nicking a goal, even against the best. Will also want to show Mourinho how wrong he was for not picking him (not that Jose will care). (FAIL)

Highest scoring player of the gameweek – Mane. (FAIL)

Success rate – 27%
